Laboring with Our Hands: Apostle Paul’s Approach

The word ‘labor’ is not a fancy word among many Christians today. To many, the word ‘labor’ connotes having no faith. They believe faith is the absence of labor or hard work, and this is the reason why they claim everything around them without necessarily putting in the effort to do anything that will make them sweat.

Many have imbibed this erroneous definition of faith and have made themselves idle, lazy, and irresponsible in doing anything reasonable. Rather than learning a skill, farming, or working, they prefer to jump from one meeting to another, seeking miracles in an attempt to avoid labor.

Apostle Paul indeed emphasizes the significance of work and personal responsibility in the Christian community. While he is well-known for his teachings on faith and grace, he also highlights the importance of labor and diligence. In his letters, Paul often encourages believers to work hard, both in their spiritual lives and in their daily tasks.

In 2 Thessalonians 3:10, he states that “if anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat,” underscoring the necessity of personal responsibility. Thus, Paul presents a balanced view of faith and works, demonstrating that both are essential to the Christian life.

To say you are an evangelist, a pastor, an apostle, or a prophet and think of nothing that you can do to support God’s work itself is anti-Christian faith. Apostle Paul was one of the busiest apostles of Jesus Christ but never used his engagement as an excuse. He did not want to survive at the expense of the weak, as many are doing today in the name of the Gospel.

What is your excuse? Why do you dislike labor and choose the path of Balaam for personal gain, prioritizing your interests over the will of God?

In another epistle, Apostle Paul wrote, “You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'” (Acts 20:34-35).

In light of the above, Christians are called to work harder than unbelievers; however, today, the opposite seems to be true. This is a deception from the enemy, who seeks to rob people of God’s blessings by leading them to disobey the truth.

As a Christian Bible school, we are called to follow Christ and obey His word. That is why vocational skills have been made a compulsory part of the college curriculum. Every graduate is expected to acquire a skill—often referred to as “tent-making”—to support themselves while reaching out to the lost.

If many believers had been taught this truth, Satan would have suffered defeat in many of our churches today. Knowing the truth is a great deliverance from Satan, who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy.

God has promised to bless the work of our hands (Deuteronomy 28:12). The question now is, what do you have in your hand that God can bless?

May God bless you as you answer this question in faith.
